iPad app for the Berliner Wasserbetriebe

Enabling construction managers to work faster and more efficiently by giving them a helpful and interaction based tool for the iPad

### Building an useful companion for the dull but important tasks At the Berliner Wasserbetriebe (water utility company of the city of Berlin) the construction managers need to have full control over their tasks at any time. Visiting construction sites, managing budget and documenting construction progress are some of the more complex tasks they have to accomplish. Some have up to ten constrcution sites to manage. There is a high need for a companion that helps to simplify and reduce the time consuming tasks. ![](/images/projects/bwb/onsite.jpg) Often they visit construction sites and talk to people working on site. #### Our Approach We have decided to look into the life of the construction managers of the Berliner Wasserbetriebe. With shadowing techniques we gained a lot informations about how they work and what they have to deal with on a daily basis. We then generated an overview document which holds all the important tasks we are going to consider during the design process. ![](/images/projects/bwb/usm.png) #### Transform interactions People interaction differently whether they doing it with a machine or in person with a human. We broke down every interaction a construction manager has during the work day and created a simple counter interaction to it. Together with the construction managers in a co-creation workshop we created an all virtual (and ideal) environment. Calling it the wondermachine. This helped us to get a sense of what their own perspective of their needs was. Together with our data from the shadowing we had many overlapping informations which we then broke into micro interactions. ![](/images/projects/bwb/shadowing.png) #### testing interactions fast In a spring we created fast prototypes (pretotypes) of the overlapping interactions, which we tested with the construction managers. After a small amount of intense days we had reliable information about what to build. ![](/images/projects/bwb/pretotype.png) As we progressed the details of the interactions became more clear. In order to make it simple and intuitive for everyone it was important that we understood every step of every task a construction manager does. ![](/images/projects/bwb/progress.png) After several more testing and iterations we had finished this stage with good results. With a reliable information architecture and interaction logic informtation we then started to visualize these data. We have used the Berliner Wasserbetriebe corperate identity to make sure the app meets the expextations of every user. For the typography we decided to use iOS standard as of 2019. San Francisco font is ok for display reading. Colors where predetermined by the CI of the Berliner Wasserbetriebe. They had *the Blue* and some other important colors. We have tried using color as little as possible. Icons stemming from Googles Material Icon family. --- #### Take a look {% include post-components/gallery.html columns = 1 full_width = true images = "/images/projects/bwb/bwb_1.png,/images/projects/bwb/bwb_2.png,/images/projects/bwb/bwb_3.png" %} After some design iterations we handed over the design to development. {% include post-components/gallery.html columns = 1 full_width = true images = "/images/projects/bwb/dev.png" %}
